Alternative Sports Blaze Across College Campuses

If you are a dedicated student and athlete, then you may find your interests conflicted when you get to college. Maintaining your GPA and still making every practice is very tough. While most coaches say that they are understanding and that school comes first, you will still face the dreaded coach and team look of disappointment when you say that your upcoming Physics test is going to prevent you from making it to the game, match, or meet over the weekend. Some college athletes are finding the perfect balance of school and sports by playing intramural and alternative sports games.

College is the perfect place to experience new things, and many students are enjoying playing sports that many people have never heard of or that are not popular in the mainstream. Of course, there is always intramural soccer or softball for athletes who want to play a traditional sport but do not have time to commit to the team, but Dmitry Druzhinsky says that there are a lot of non traditional physical activities appearing on college campuses all over the country.

One of the most popular games is ultimate frisbee. This game is similar to soccer or basketball in that teams try to move the frisbee down a field and throw it into a predetermined goal area. The catch is that once you are holding the frisbee you must plant your feet and not move. While players on the other team try to block you, you must pass the frisbee to a teammate in order to move it down the field. The game requires a lot of running back and forth and is an excellent source of cardio according to Dmitry Druzhinsky.

Another popular and fun game is inner tube water polo. Most campuses have a pool, and this is a great way for chlorine enthusiasts to spend some time in the water without doing laps. Inner tube water polo involves moving a ball up and down the pool and trying to score in the opposing team’s goal. You must always be touching your inner tube while in the water, and this makes it hard to maneuver. In many cases the game devolves into bumper tubes.

One of the newest games to appear on college campuses, according to Dmitry Druzhinsky, is based on the popular Harry Potter book series by J.K. Rowling. Quidditch is played at the magical school of Hogwarts in the book and is a sport played on flying brooms. While colleges have not yet mastered the art of levitation, students still enjoy running around with a broom between their legs and trying to throw the Quaffle into one of three hoops in order to score. Two players run around with balls called Bludgers that they can throw at opposing team members in order to freeze them, and one person pretends to be the Snitch and needs to be caught before the game can end.

So many fun and alternative sports make it easy to enjoy being an athlete in college while also being a successful student. Students who have found that they do not have the time to play sports at the collegiate level are still able to enjoy playing and having fun with their friends.

Tennis Star Steffi Graf's Father Dies of Cancer

Dmitry Druzhinsky News is sad to report that tennis legend Steffi Graf's father passed away from cancer on Saturday. The Wimbledon legend credited her father as one of the key factors in driving her to top of the tennis world. Her dad, Peter Graf, who had been battling pancreatic cancer was 75 years old. Steffi and her dad were once inseparable since he was also her coach and ex-manager. The 44 year old tennis legend has always credited her father for guiding and helping her win 22 world titles in her illustrious career. She wrote on her website "Our good father and grandfather, Peter Graf, has gone in peace from us. We grieve quietly and look back on many beautiful moments we spent together."

Your Serve: How Tennis Can Lead To A Better Life

Tennis Can Make You Healthier - Dmitry Druzhinsky News

Playing a sport like tennis is about much more than just hitting a ball back and forth.  Tennis is a great workout, and can be a major factor in leading a healthy and robust life.  Tennis expert Dmitry Druzhinsky sums it up thus:  “When you play tennis, you engage in a physical activity that isn’t overly demanding, and at the same time, burn calories and reduce your risk of heart disease.  Tennis is something that doesn’t require a lot of equipment or planning, that can be played pretty much anywhere in the world, indoors or outdoors as the weather permits, and can help you get in shape.  It’s win-win!”

True, tennis has many great benefits.  If you’re thinking about taking up a hobby that can be great fun and get you into a healthier life condition, then tennis might be just the thing for you.  Dima Druzhinsky provides the following benefits from playing tennis.

1. Low Impact

Unlike other sports like football, rugby, and lacrosse, tennis is much less physically demanding.  The lack of contact is obviously a factor, but even for sports like basketball and soccer, tennis allows you to work up a good sweat, without requiring you to push your body to its physical limits.  Though there is some heavier knee and ankle impact, the sport itself is fairly easy on your body as a whole, and is great for people who are looking to start getting in shape, or those who can’t take the rigor of heavier sports.

2. Cardio Workout

During a tennis match, you heart rate goes up, and stays up.  This is a great cardio workout, and will help in reducing cholesterol, burn fat, and reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes.  Running after the ball, and using your full body in play is a sturdy exercise that can make a major positive impact on your overall health and well being.

3. Builds and Tones Muscle

More than just burning fat, playing tennis builds and tones muscles, especially those in the legs, arms, and back.  The running back and forth across the court is great for legs, and the strokes of hitting the ball with your racket works out upper and lower arm muscles, as well as those in your mid and lower back.  This activity can help take a flabby body and turn it tight and toned as you play more and more over time.

4. Hand/Eye Coordination

Good hand/eye coordination makes you better at many of the daily tasks that we engage in, from driving to typing to building things.  Tennis refines hand/eye coordination extremely well, as you keep your eye on the ball, and react.  Though other activities aid in this as well, like playing certain video games, tennis is the much better option if what you’re looking to do is get in shape and have fun in the process.  Tennis and health expert Dmitry Druzhinsky states “why sit in front of your T.V. pretending to play tennis, when you can go out and experience the real thing?”

Dmitry Druzhinsky Loves Tennis

My name is Dmitry Druzhinsky and this is my collections of sports photos and things I love the most. One of my favorite sports is Tennis. This has something to do with the fact that I am Russian as it is something we grow up with since childhood. Still, I know I am not alone in this adoration of the sport since it is a very popular one; not just in Russia.

As with any sports there are some fans who can be labeled fanatics due to the way they act when celebrating a win or a lost. No fan wants to see his or her favorite team lose. Even more when it is during playoffs or tournaments.

I will be posting about many matters in this blog, not just sports. I also love photography, fishing and a lot more outdoor sports.
